Delilah Orti said that every Monday her daughter, Mia, a kindergartner last year in the Miami-Dade Public Schools system in Florida, received a homework packet with about 25 worksheets that were due at the end of that week.
Orti said the packet included work on phonics, spelling, reading comprehension, and social studies. She describes her daughter as a quick learner who was already reading in kindergarten but still needed her help with word problems and science worksheets.
She and some of her colleagues at the school located about 90 miles south of San Francisco decided a good way to do that would be to eliminate those homework packets. During that time, she said, she started to research homework and found the case against it for young elementary pupils very compelling.

Welcome to Kindergarten! My name is Courtney McAlpin and I am THRILLED to be your kindergarten teacher! This year is going to be full of lots of learning and new adventures. I grew up in San Diego and received my Bachelor's degree from San Diego State University. After moving to the Bay Area, I received my teaching credential from Notre Dame de Namur as well as my California State Reading Specialist Credential and Master's in Reading from Santa Clara University. This will be my 12th year in elementary education. I taught first and second grade for 7 years and for the last 4 years, I was a Reading Specialist. While I have found success in all grade levels, my heart belongs to early childhood education and I am thrilled to be teaching kindergarten.
We all know differentiation is vitally important in the kindergarten classroom, for that matter, in any classroom. But what a challenge it is because it requires so much time and attention to detail. In this set, all the prep has been done for you, so your month of December is all set, and the differentiation beast has been conquered! 2ff7e9595c
